Miss Wisconsin Congeniality’s Insider’s
Guide To
Madison Volume Three
"How Sweet It Is"
After you get food from one of
Madison’s great restaurants you have to have something sweet. Ice
cream and custard are HUGE things for Madisonians to eat after a
meal. What is custard you may ask? Well, custard is made with eggs
and milk where ice cream just has the milk. Many places around
Madison serve custard. One of those places is Culvers. You may
remember from my previous article that they have good food, but they
also have excellent custard. They have the traditional chocolate
and vanilla custard, but everyday, every SINGLE Culvers has a
different flavor of the day. From Take 5 to Chocolate Explosion,
each day is different, but each day the custard is still as amazing
as the last. |
|
Another
good place to find custard is at Michael’s Frozen Custard. There are
5 Michael’s in Madison and surrounding areas. They have tons of
sundaes to pick from. I like the Peanut Butter Cup and Bear Claw.
They also have a Flavor of the Month. You can eat outside and watch
the people of Madison have fun in the summer. And if your dog is
with you and wants a cool treat, Michaels also has K9 custard that
is safe for dogs to eat. |
|
If
you prefer ice cream, you can definitely get some good ice cream in
Madison. The BEST ice cream you can find in Madison is at Babcock
Hall. This is part of the Department of Food Science on the
University of Madison campus. At Babcock, you can find ice cream,
frozen yogurt, cheese, sandwiches, a variety of dairy products and
other Wisconsin gifts. Each month they post their monthly flavors,
but everyday flavors are Blue Moon, Butter Pecan, Vanilla,
Strawberry, Chocolate Peanut Butter, Chocolate, Fudge Marble, Mint
Chocolate Cookie, Mochaccino, Cookies and Cream, Chocolate Chip
Cookie Dough and Orange Custard Chocolate Chip. I will never forget
the time I went to Babcock with a school field trip and we got red
ice cream; I thought it was super awesome. They have fun with what
they use for ice cream ingredients. For example, this month they
have Pistachio Nut Ice Cream. |
|
You
can only really find the good Babcock ice cream at the student
Unions on campus or at the Babcock Hall store. Some other places
sell Babcock ice cream, but to truly enjoy the whole experience you
really should go to the Union or the store. Winning “Best in
Madison” awards year after year in several categories, the Terrace
behind the Memorial Union on campus is the definitive place to eat
your cone. Settle in on one of the brightly colored sunburst chairs,
gaze out at the boats on Lake Mendota, soak up the sun and
people-watch to your heart’s content. |
|
There
is also the Chocolate Shoppe on State Street in downtown Madison.
Here you can find 110 flavors of ice cream. So everyone is sure to
find one they like. You can also find awesome Wisconsin clothes and
other souvenirs. |
|
Another
good place to go is Cold Stone Creamery. I know that there are Cold
Stones everywhere, but there is one in Greenway Station (by the
Supreme Session hotels) and one downtown. I love the one downtown
because once you get your ice cream you can sit out on State Street
and watch the people passing by or you could walk to an outdoor
event. |
|
Combine
a sugar rush with fun and you get Ella’s Deli. At this restaurant
you can get a meal, but you can also go and just get dessert. From
malts and shakes to banana splits you can find a wide range of good
desserts at
Ella’s. Setting the gold standard for belly-busting treats in
Madison is Ella’s grilled pound cake hot fudge sundae.
Ella’s Deli not only attracts
visitors with its great food and desserts, but the restaurant is a
fun destination for young and old alike. Every inch of the inside of
the restaurant is decorated with animated figures, moving objects
and memorabilia. Outside, during spring and summer you can take a
ride on the 1927 Parker carousel. |

I hope you all have the
opportunity to try some Wisconsin desserts when you visit us at
Supreme Session! We are called “America’s Dairyland” and we’ve got
the delicious treats to back it up. |
