About the Supreme Guardian

Denise Noonan
Supreme Guardian 2006-2007
Past Grand Guardian Indiana

A native “Hoosier,” my formative years were spent on a farm in central Indiana.

After moving to Indianapolis, I was initiated into Bethel 4 on March 5, 1960.  At that time, the Bethel choir numbered over 20 Daughters!! Unfortunately, the Bethel is now closed, but I recall with fondness the Friday night DeMolay dances slumber parties and bus trips to Chicago.

The number 4 has been dominant throughout my Job’s Daughter’s experience.  In 1984, I was appointed Guardian of Bethel 44, Crown Point and served as Grand Fourth Messenger 1989-1990.  When I completed my term as Grand Guardian in 1994, I served once again as Guardian of Bethel 44 and later as Guardian of Bethel 54 in Valparaiso.   Our Grand Bethel region number is also 4!    I will complete my term as Grand Bethel Guardian at our Grand Session.

Susan Mentel and I became acquainted as we progressed through our respective Grand lines.  It was truly an honor to serve as Supreme Fifth Messenger for her and David Moffitt in 2002-2003.

In 2005, I was presented with my 25 year pin from Lake Chapter OES, Crown Point and recently completed three years as Secretary of Crown Court No. 23, Order of the Amaranth.

My husband, Herb, and I are both graduates of Indiana State University.  He retired from teaching in 2000 and works part-time for Great Lakes Peterbilt.  After 32 years of employment with the Social Security Administration, I retired in January 2006.

We are the proud parents of Leslie, Chuck, and Megan and have been blessed with Alicia, our daughter-in-law, and two beautiful grandchildren, Tyler and Renae.  Both Leslie and Megan are Past Honored Queens of Bethel 44.

Little did I anticipate that when I joined Job’s Daughters, I would one day serve as Supreme Guardian!! I vow to give the best that is in me, extend the hand of friendship and open my heart to our Daughters.  I am blessed to be sharing the coming year with Tom.  We are not only “neighbors,” but kindred spirits in our belief that our Daughters should always be first in all we do.  “Hand to Hand and Heart to Heart” let our journey begin throughout Job’s Daughters land.

Thoughts from Miss International

When I heard my name announced as the winner of the MIJD Pageant, I could hardly believe my ears!  I still cannot believe it when people introduce me as the Miss International Job’s Daughter, and don’t think it will ever set in.  I had such a great time during the pageant meeting the other contestants and can’t wait to see them on my travels this coming year.

Speaking of travels, I have a busy schedule ahead!  I will be traveling with the Supreme Guardian, the Associate Supreme Guardian and Erin Duskey, SBHQ.  Since I just graduated high school, I will be postponing school for a year so I can dedicate all my time to traveling.  We will be mostly in the United States but will spend a lot of time in Canada, Australia for a week, Brazil for a couple of weeks, and hopefully the Philippine Islands in May.  I am anxious to see the variations between the jurisdictions and how each one has its on special traits and way of doing things.  I am so excited to meet everyone and look forward to seeing you down the road!

Jobie Love,
Erin Leigh Weisshaar

Supreme Travels August - December

Sláinte chugat!!

That’s Irish for “Good health” to you all as we begin a new year!!

Following the Installation, I did vow to do timely SNE articles.  However, I have failed miserably in meeting this goal.  When I did have time at home, personal matters were my priority along with the clerical duties associated with this position.  There are certificates to be prepared, financial accountings to submit and forms to sign.  In addition, I soon realized that one did not always have internet access while traveling.  I am grateful to our Miss IJD, Erin Leigh Weisshaar, for her endeavors to keep the Job’s Daughter world informed of our travels.

Minnesota Camp was great!! Erin Leigh and I failed miserably in our canoe certification and never came close to rounding the first buoy.  We all were touched by the Saturday evening program as our lighted candles were towed out into the lake.

Our visit to Wisconsin afforded me the opportunity to become better acquainted with Erin Leigh and Erin Nicole.  We spent time together climbing the tower and taking a guided tour of the conference grounds with Mike Hoglund.  Tom and I also had the honor of serving as Pageant Judges that week-end.  Green Lake is absolutely beautiful.

Vicki Loughmiller, Supreme Bethel Guardian, and Darrell Vierling, Associate Supreme Bethel Guardian joined us for the walk on the Mackinaw Bridge during our Supreme Visit to Michigan.  What an experience.  I was fine as long I did not look through the open grids.  We managed to accomplish this endeavor in a little over an hour and a half.  I must report that not every member of the Supreme Team participated in the walk.

Following a short respite at the Smiley’s, the Daughters and I drove to London Ontario to visit Bethel 3.  It was during this trip that I realized that I could not count on Erin Nicole for having a sense of direction and that Erin Leigh was apt to misplace her cell phone.

It was wonderful to share in the Washington and British Columbia celebration of International Day.  The Daughters of both jurisdictions presided beautifully.  Later, the Supreme Team joined the Daughters and Adults for an evening of bowling.

Our visit to Bethel 2 in Reno and Bethel 4 in Carson City prompted me to rent a car for the first time in my life.  Needless to say, I was relieved when the car was returned without any complications!!  In our free time, we toured Virginia City, Carson City, and Lake Tahoe.  Mr. and Mrs. Hinman also treated the Erins’ and me to lunch one day.
The visit to Illinois included a kick ball game.  I am happy to report that the Supreme Guardian’s team was victorious in spite of the umpire.  The Supreme Bethel Guardian did take a tumble, but recovered quickly.

Once again using Hotel Smiley, I drove alone to Bethel 6 in Guelph for their official visit.  It was wonderful to be hosted by Mr. and Mrs. Carberry as they both were born in Ireland.  I was treated to a trip to Niagara Falls.  What an amazing site!!

The day before we left for Brazil, I attended the Official Visits of Bethel 44 Crown Point and Bethel 54 Valparaiso in my own jurisdiction.  It was great to be home and witness new members initiated into both Bethels.

BRASIL!!! This is an experience that one must encounter personally.  The Daughters are so eager to learn and were full of questions now that they have official Rituals.  With every stop, Marilee conducted training sessions with the Daughters, assisted by Erin Leigh and Erin Nicole.   We were treated to beautiful ceremonies in Campo Grande and Paraná.  The visit to Paraná was the first by a Supreme Guardian and Associate Supreme Guardian.  There were a few glitches in our travels, but we survived.

We were welcomed warmly by the Manitoba Jurisdictional Guardian Council and treated to a traditional Winnipeg meal full of ethnic dishes.  A day was spent touring the Royal Canadian Mint and the Parliament House.  Bethel 9 conducted a wonderful meeting and initiated new members.

At General Grand Chapter, the Minnesota Promotion Committee provided space for our promotional display.  Both Erin Leigh and Erin Nicole were fantastic representatives for our Order.  They provided remarks to the delegates, answered questions and greeted everyone who stopped by our display.  Tom and I were approached by a Special Deputy to the Most Worthy Grand Patron about the possibility of Job’s Daughters in Romania.  We excitedly answered his questions.

Both Daughters and I enjoyed a wonderful week-end with the Montana Jurisdictional Guardian Council.  Following dinner, we attended the meeting of Bethel 3 in Billings which included the initiation of the Third Messenger’s sister.  It was adorable to have her make remarks and express how happy she was to finally be a part of the Bethel.

It was then to California for their Grand Session.  Tom and I were guests at their special banquets and thoroughly enjoyed their Past Grinds luncheon.  I laughed until I cried at their antics.  It was wonderful to spend an afternoon with Marty Schaefer at Disney Downtown, eating corn dogs and ice cream.  I enjoyed the opportunity to attend their business and Deputy meetings and participate as a bidder in their silent auction.

Beginning November 16th through December 9th, Tom, Carol, Erin Leigh and I visited Pennsylvania Grand Bethel Week-end, North Carolina, Virginia Pageant, Delaware, Maryland, West Virginia, and Louisville Kentucky.  Side trips included Hershey Chocolate, Gettysburg, Williamsburg, Fort McHenry, Baltimore Aquarium, Louisville Slugger and a doctor visit for the Supreme Guardian.  We also welcomed a visitor from Romania.   As a member of Eastern Star, she shared in the Virginia, Delaware and Maryland visits and attended several Bethel meetings so she could learn more about our Order.

The week prior to Christmas, I journeyed to Bethel 19 in Florence Kentucky for their Supreme Visit, accompanied by Bonnie Kelly.  Former Miss IJD Amanda Centers Sorrell and her husband opened their home to us.  We visited a special Irish shop near the Ohio River and had a tour of Covington.

Words can not express my heartfelt gratitude to the Bethels under Supreme, Jurisdictional Guardian Councils, and the Grand Guardian Councils for their generosity during our visits the first term.  Thank you for extending the hand of friendship and touching our hearts.

MISS INTERNATIONAL JOB'S DAUGHTER RECEPTION

Submitted by Marilyn Olson, PGG of WY and chairman of the BOT, JDI

A reception honoring Miss International Job’s Daughter, Erin Leigh Weisshaar, was held on February 11, 2007 in Cheyenne , Wyoming .  The event was attended by 154 people from all across the states. Friends and family of Erin from all across Wyoming made a terrific showing as well as dignitaries from many other places.  Supreme Guardian Denise Noonan, Associate Supreme Guardian Tom Sapp, Supreme Bethel Guardian Vicki Loughmiller, Associate Supreme Bethel Guardian Darrell Vierling, Supreme Bethel Honored Queen Erin Nicole Duskey, Past Supreme Guardian Shirley Bryngelson were among those in attendance.  We enjoyed a terrific pasta bar and a dessert to die for – a chocolate fountain!  Erin’s home Bethel #20 of Torrington , Wyoming sang her special song, “Seasons of Love”, then various people made presentations. Poster boards of special pictures of Erin and her friends were made for her.  She even had the luxury of having her “real parents” in attendance.  Now she can finally dump the two that showed up pretending to be her parents (and who signed all her papers for Jean Owen in Vancouver !)  We all had a great time and as usual Erin was delightful, gracious, great fun, and a good sport – even when we let her sister roast her!!

MIJD Reception Cheyenne, Wyoming by MIJD Erin Leigh

My reception turned out even better than I imagined.  I was ecstatic with the turnout; over 150 people were in attendance for the afternoon.  My immediate family that was there included my parents, Dale and Trenda Weisshaar, and my sister, Megan.  Both sets of grandparents, John and Jackie Garrett and Junior and Jerry Weisshaar were there along with aunts, uncles and cousins.  On my mom’s side: my Aunt TC Travis and my cousin Ryan, my Aunt Tina and Uncle Jesse Taylor and my Aunt Traci Garrett.  On my dad’s side: my Aunt Judy Rusher and my cousin Amy Ison and her daughter Grace Ann, and my great uncle and aunt, Gene and Kathy Weisshaar.  I was happy that so much of my family was there to share in the celebration.  I am so lucky to have such a supportive and loving family!  I love you all more than you know, thanks for being there for me.

Other distinguished guests from out of state included Denise Noonan, SG, Tom Sapp, ASG and his wife Carol, Erin Duskey, SBHQ, Jean Owen, Pageant Chairman, Vickie Loughmiller, SBG, Darrell Vierling, ASBG and his wife Linda.  I know what a commitment it takes to travel those long distances and it meant the world to me that they were able to make it.  The rest of the guests included Jobies, adults, and friends from all over Wyoming, and some from Colorado.  So many of the people there have had a positive impact on my life and I was honored to have them in attendance.

I was floored when I walked in to see the room for the first time.  The decorations were beautiful!  Each table had a fall-colored flower arrangement with matching ribbons, elegant vases and floating candles.  Soon people started filing in and the reception was underway.  The hostess, JoDee Duncan did a superb job making sure everything was in order.  We started with a welcome from my parents and then introduction of the head table.  Next we offered a prayer given by the Grand Chaplain, Jeri Spoonemore.  The hotel catered a pasta bar buffet that had several different pasta selections and sauces.  Even the dessert bar was phenomenal!  The chocolate fountain was a hit with treats like angel food cake, pretzels, pineapple and strawberries to drizzle in chocolate- mmm…good!  After I finished eating, I tried to visit with each table and thank them for attending.

The program was headed up by Marilyn Olson, PGG and included remarks from my family.  My mom and sister both managed to get me teary-eyed despite their ability to tell embarrassing stories (no need to repeat them againJ).  I miss my family terribly and it is hard to be away from them while I am on the road.  Mom, Dad, Dan and Megan- I LOVE YOU and would not be here today without your love and support.  Other roasts were from the Supreme Guardian, Associate Supreme Guardian and Supreme Bethel Honored Queen- little do they know that I have a chance for revenge at their receptions!  Another special presentation was from Bethel #20, who sang my song, Seasons of Love.  It was beautiful and I started crying before they even sang a note.  Some friends came up and shared memories including JoDee Duncan and her father Jim who have been there since the beginning with me.  Erin Jespersen, past MIJD and dear friend told about our life parallels and memories together.  Georgia Smith, PGBHQ and part of my first Grand family spoke on behalf of herself and father Ben Smith.  Jessica Blackman, MWJD related our experiences in Jobies and the excitement of sharing this year together.  Jette Brownlee and her mom Gayle made a presentation regarding Supreme Session in BC.  Other presentations were from Bethel #25 who presented a check for my travel money, and from Marilee Smilee who sent a gift and letter to be read.  Just when I thought it was over another presentation was underway.  Marilyn Olson, posing as my father and decked out in a suit and Charlie Chaplin hat, and Margie George, posing as my mother sporting a lovely dress and bright pink lipstick made a quite a spectacle.  They presented me with a lovely (not) pageant dress and carried on about being gone all of the time, running up the credit card bills and describing some candid pictures of me in my younger days and on the road this year.  It was a riot J!

I have so many people to thank for making this day so memorable.  Mom, thank you for making everything come together for the special day, I didn’t have to worry about anything and you wouldn’t let me lift a finger.  I know you worked hard getting everything ready and setting up before the reception started- THANKS!  A big thank you goes to JoDee Duncan, who covered the planning, preparation, and detail work.  I am sure it was difficult to juggle that along with school and I appreciated knowing that if something needed to be done, you were the go-to person.  I mentioned the angel food cake earlier, thank you to MaeBelle Boyles, Aunt Traci and Mom for making all of those cakes- they were delicious.  To Marilyn Olson, thank you for taking care of the program and answering all of our questions.  To Erin Jespersen, thanks for helping with the address labels and getting the table decorations.  To Courtney Ellis, thank you for manning the cake table, it was a dirty job!  Also thank you to my family who helped in setting up and taking down the decorations, guest table and that crazy chocolate fountain.
